Calder: Craziness in the fifth

A wild chain of events within a matter of minutes ended up with jockey Carlos Esquilin celebrating his first career victory after guiding Dreamalittledream to victory in the fifth race.

The strange bit of drama began when heavy rain began to fall as the field neared the starting gate for the mid-priced maiden claimer for 2-year-old fillies at a mile. Moments later, odds on favorite Patience Game acted up while being loaded and was scratched. There was traffic trouble going into the first turn that virtually eliminated Vintage Candy. Longshot Vital Victory set the pace but 3-2 favorite readily ran by the  leader and drew off to a seemingly insurmountable lead neaer midstretch only to stagger home and get caught on the money by the late surging winner.  Won't say fast closing because they ran the final quarter in :29 2/5 over the sloppy track.

Definitely no bias to this wet racetrack if the early results on the card are any indication of what to expect in the second half of the 11 race program.
