Breeders' Cup betting in England

The Breeders' Cup pre-entires are in. Now comes the problem of making sense of 184 different horses aiming to run in 14 different races. In England and Ireland, they have been making book on many of the Cup races for a month. That is the charm of antepost wagering. If you are bold enough to take a chance, you can ususally get a good price on your selection weeks, if not months, in advance of race day.

William Hill, one of Britain's "Big Three" bookmakers along with Ladbrokes and Coral, is first off the mark with prices on all of the Breeders' Cup pre-entries. They are offered in this space not merely as a comparison with Churchill Downs' morning line, but as an example of real odds based on real money being bet, something the morning line will never be.

Of course there is a bias to these odds. Generally speaking, in races in which there are European entries- and especially British entries- the odds on European horses could be lower than what you will eventually get on the American tote. Conversely, slightly longer odds can be found on European horses in American betting, but you may have to wait until raceday to get them.

This truism is more true in races like the Juvenile Turf and Juvenile Fillies Turf in which Americans are unfamilirr with the foreign entries. On the other hand, there is no getting away from the fact that Goldikova, Midday and Workforce are going to be similarly priced at both Churchill Downs and with William Hill or any other British bookie.

The William Hill odds for the leading Breeders' Cup contenders in post time order follow.

William Hill is also offering a number of special bets. Among them are the number of European-trained winners, including all Godolphins, be they trained in Europe or America. No such winners is 50-1, one winner 14-1, two winners 5-1, three winners 9-4, four winners 7-4, five winners or more 3-1. Last year at Santa Anita there were six European winners, all Godolphins included.

Betting on the three big European favorites- Goldikova, Midday and Workforce- looks like this. No winners from that group is 7-2. One winner is 5-4. Two winners 2-1. If all three of them win you get back 8-1.
