No Breeders’ Cup favorites here, only bombers. Maybe a few will slip through the cracks on Friday. In the Marathon, this handicapper likes Giant Oak, but does not love him. Don’t like Awesome Gem, but don’t hate him. Atoned is the bomber. He has faced better, and if he hits the board at a big price, that is good enough.

Quality Road sometimes is a victim of defensive strategy. Brilliant when he uses his speed, Quality Road is ordinary when he leaves the gun in his holster. Quality Road was odds-on in the Whitney in August, but slowed the pace to an extreme crawl and was outrun late by Blame. Quality Road was a contender in the Jockey Club Gold Cup last October, but backed up the pace and was outrun late by Summer Bird. Quality Road’s trainer Todd Pletcher knows the remedy.

Saturday could be big for California in the Breeders’ Cup, if the West Coast shippers are as good as this West Coast handicapper believes. It is time to take a look. Horses are listed in post-position order. Juvenile Turf No starters, no interest. Sprint Smiling Tiger drilled a good horse (next-out stakes winner Cost of Freedom) last out. Smiling Tiger has trained super since arriving in Kentucky, and enters with a big shot.
