Twirling Candy is the even-money program favorite in the Strub Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita. It is a race Twirling Candy does not have to win. Think it’s a crazy idea? Think again. One year ago, everyone thought Misremembered would win the Strub. He finished second at 7-10. Ten years ago, Tiznow was 3-10 to win the Strub. He finished second. And way back in 1993, it was Bertrando at 3-10. He was such a “mortal lock” that several of his owners watched the race adjacent to the winner’s circle. Bertrando finished second.

Caracortado (Saturday) and Switch (Sunday) stole the show at Santa Anita. It is time for a weekend stakes recap. # There was belly-aching by supporters of Cost of Freedom after the odds-on sprinter was hounded into defeat in the $200,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint (race 5) on Saturday. While the insane early fractions (:20.80 and :42.72) would be enough to get most sprinters beat, it sounds shallow to grumble about pace. A six-furlong race with a six-figure purse is supposed to unfold at a fast clip. At odds-on, Cost of Freedom weakened to third.

Five-horse fields are not the right cup of tea for most bettors. The racing card Thursday at Santa Anita opened with a five-horse field. Betting value? There was none, probably. Schuylkill Punch was odds-on in the $40,000 maiden-claiming sprint. It was a good race to pass. The Santa Anita press box windows were open on the blue-sky, summer-like day. It was 78 degrees and relatively quiet as the horses neared the gate for the first race of the week.

Square Eddie is a good horse, and trainer Doug O’Neill was right. Despite not having started Square Eddie in more than one year, O’Neill said “He’s ready to win.” He was more than ready, it turns out. Square Eddie on Friday obliterated the Santa Anita track record for six and one-half furlongs, a record set more than 12 years ago by Son of a Pistol. Square Eddie smashed it. He raced virtually gate to wire in 1:13.11, three-fifths off the old mark. He did it while geared down the final yards.

I was living on borrowed time in Santa Anita ShowVivor. The online contest (www.santaanita.com) requires a player to pick one horse a day to hit the board. Not too tough, right? Six days into the contest, more than 80 percent of the 4,596 orginal players already were gone. I somehow hung on for dear life through six racing days between Jan. 1 through Jan. 8. It was not pretty. Real Rockport finished a bad third at odds-on Jan. 2. Temp finished a bad third Jan. 7. Derrick Do was fully extended to hold third on Jan. 8.
