Big 'Cap Weekend!

Email

It's an exciting weekend of racing!

Let's take a look at today's three Grade 1 races at Santa Anita.

LAS VIRGENES STAKES - SANTA ANITA - RACE 9:

I'll take a stab with a price runner, #6 MADE TO LOVE HER (12-1 morning line).  The favorites, RENEESGOTZIP and EDEN'S MOON have shown talent, but must answer some questions.  The former, a quick daughter of City Zip, must stretch her speed around two turns for the first time while Eden's Moon missed the Santa Ysabel on January 28 due to a fever. Both horses like to race on the pace and there's a chance they may battle hard for early supremacy.  If that happens, Made to Love Her could be charging late.  The winner of the $100,000 Moccasin Stakes over the Hollywood cushion track last year, albeit against a weak field, Made to Love Her did win her maiden over this surface three back.  Although no match for Reneesgotzip in the Grade 2 Santa Ynez on January 15, she rallied widest over a speed-favoring surface that afternoon.  She must improve drastically to win this tough heat, but is worth a chance at a price for top rider Rafael Bejarano and trainer James Kasparoff (trained Bob Black Jack to graded success).

Selections:  MADE TO LOVE HER, RENEESGOTZIP, EDEN'S MOON

FRANK E. KILROE MILE - SANTA ANITA - RACE 10:

JERANIMO took the measure of MR COMMONS in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile over this course and distance on October 8 and should be a better price than the John Shirreffs-trained runner in the Kilroe.  After winning the Grade 2 Citation Handicap, Jeranimo faltered to second as the beaten favorite in the Grade 2 San Gabriel on January 16.  In that race, Jeranimo bobbled at the start and then was caught up in a cat-and-mouse game with another pace runner for the first half-mile.  Once Jeranimo asserted control, he was immediately confroted by The Usual Q.T.  After Jeranimo put The Usual Q.T. away, he was faced with a razor-sharp closer in Norvsky and just couldn't hold off that one's strong stretch kick.  Jeranimo may be a bit better with a target and he could find himself sitting off COMPARI and JIMMY SIMMS in the opening stages of this race.  He should get the jump on Mr. Commons turning for home and I like the cutback to a mile.

SELECTIONS:  JERANIMO, WILLYCONKER, MR. COMMONS

***

SANTA ANITA HANDICAP - SANTA ANITA - RACE 11:

It's a big field for the Big 'Cap and several have a chance.  We'll find out how good ULTIMATE EAGLE is this afternoon as the runaway winner of the Grade 2 Strub Stakes (in his first start on dirt) figures to face a bit more pace heat in this spot.  It's hard not to root for a horse like Ultimate Eagle, who overcame a near-fatal bout of colic to become a Grade 1 winner.  He proved that ten furlongs wasn't an issue when taking the Hollywood Derby on grass last year and has shown an ability to rate and finish when he absolutely must do so.  In the Strub, he battled odds-on favorite Tapitzar into defeat before opening up on the field for good late on the backstretch.  He should be on or near the lead here and could be the one to catch when the real racing begins.

SELECTIONS:  ULTIMATE EAGLE, NORVSKY, RON THE GREEK

***

Here are some quick and dirty selections for some of the other major stakes races:

Top Flight:  IT'S TRICKY, LOVE AND PRIDE, DELIGHTFUL MARY

Tom Fool:  EMCEE, CALEB'S POSSE, CALIBRACHOA

Gotham:  HANSEN, MY ADONIS, KING AND CRUSADER

Canadian Turf:  MUTUAL TRUST, LITTLE MIKE, DOUBLES PARTNER

Joe Hernandez (Sunday):  MR GRUFF, GIG HARBOR, MENSA HEAT

More importantly, who do you like this weekend?  I want to know.

Have a great weekend.

So why did you change your format? I was doing pretty well with my FB login. Anyway... Big Cap’s winner Ron The Greek was secretly my favourite despite a stellar history to fall back on..ask me why? I simply love upsets and have been experiencing a lot of them gaming the www.horseracegame.com...somehow Ron The Greek suited the profile so well. Reneesgotzip has a lot of hardwork to do if she wants to trample My Miss Aurelia’s obvious dominance in fillies category, something even Hansen enjoys but might not any longer when Gemologist and El Padrino like race horses set the field on fire...well may be Derby field will sure exceed the standards last year’s mediocre field set.

Well, Harrington is sending both Creative Cause and Emoire Way into the San Filipe Saturday. Rosario gets the ride on Creative Cause, and Mike says he's still not sure who rides Empire Way. I'd try to get Garret Gomez up for sure...but he may be holding out for one of the Bafferts? Creative Cause earnied his way in off a blistering :46.4 for 4f work at Hollywood this am. I'm loaded up with both of them for individual futures tickets from Pool 1, and in boxed exactas with El Padrino from Pool 2. So, let the best Harrington horse win! Keith L.

Alan: Looks like Chad Brown saw the handwriting on the paddock wall where it was written "Emily" would be fitted with blinkers. Your Street Life has bailed, and will pick up his heels for his late run at Laurel soon...handy, hunnh? You get to go see him run! Annie: Looks like I called the dance on Alpha to the Florida Derby...Ramon will be happy to have a shot at two million dollar purses in the same week, hunnh? We'll see who he stays on. Hope no one does what Maker did to Castellano. But the pedigree picture and the future rides for Goldolphin and McLaughlin argue for him picking Alpha, I believe. Hansen is no more assured of an easy victory in the Wood than is Uncle Mo (errr...make that Union Rags) in the Fla Derby. New shooters are on their way, and depending on how "Emily" does tomorrow, he might be one of them as Maan certainly fizzeled Saturday after being a bit of the pace picture. Eddie Kenneally will have a runner in there if the horse is honest! It strikes me that Bob Baffert just might send one in here also...Lord knows he has horses to spare. SR Vegas: Saw something on the front page a few days back that mentioned Pletcher sending Our Entourage up for Wood Memorial. Of course, he still has Jeanne's Raconteur to go in the gate. Let the best girl win in that toss up! Keith L.

Alan: Look to see Street Life going in The Private Terms Stakes March 17th at 1 mile on the Laurel dirt...purse of $100K. Leaves a turnaround of 25 days to the Wood Memorial if they decide to go on with him Or, being by Street Sense, do you think joining the cast of the Bluegrass runners is more realistic for him? Keith L.

Thanks! I had not yet read this article: http://www.drf.com/news/aqueduct-inflation-target-stretching-out Perhaps I should have told SR Vegas to hold on playing a Wynn Derby Futures Wager on Street Life for me earlier today??

Ya know...I'm not seeing where he missed a work. Raced on 2/11 breaking his Maiden in a strong effort, came back in 15 days for 4f drill 2/26, and back for 5f on 3/4. Maybe they just needed an excuse to go to Laurel for the lion's share of $100K? You must have got some pretty good odds from Wynns! Keith L.

Annie, Lol...LoL...LoL.........You are correctomondo Signora.......Butt: Will they all do it.. I sound a little like this when I haven't been on in awhile........... "Wait a minute, did I read that one ? Wait........Yeah, I read that one....Oops...No, I didn't. It looks like the one I read last night......Didn't she say that before, or is this a repeat....? Besides keeping the # of posts, I have to write down the 1st few words & notice who wrote to whom, & see if it's indented to the 1st one or the 2nd or 3rd one & keep counting like a schoolkid...IIII & cross it for a 5th...& then IIII & cross again. All the while trying to read & then I lose track of the total # of comments & I have to start all over again......Egads....... If I was away a couple of days I'll be quite honest..I'd probably not even look..& I have never done that before.....I will let you be the spokeswoman & if you need help ? Ugh.. Ehn.... Curt V.

Gracie, You're welcome! I thought you would probably be feeling bad about your OUT OF BOUNDS. I know you were pleased to have him, and I didn't want your very first MKB experience to be a bad one. HANSEN should be fun to follow throughout his career and even as a sire. I wonder if he will sire a lot of gray foals. I suppose it depends on what mares he is bred to. I'd love to see a picture of him as a foal. Was he always this white? A lot of grays don't look that white until they are old. But he was white already at two. Anyway, he should be fun to follow. No problem telling which one is him in a race, is there? :) Annie

Curtis V. Slewster, I agree. I knew this format would be difficult with the number of comments that are made here every day. We could avoid the inconvenience of constantly scrolling back page after page to catch new replies if EVERYONE would just post a new comment instead of attaching replies. Then all new comments would be right at the top. But getting everyone to do the same thing is like herding cats, isn't it? I am going to start doing that from now on. Annie

Woke to a brilliantly sunny morning in Northeast. Weatherman promises more of the same and says tomorrow we flirt with the high 50s thru the day. And, better yet, says with the warming trend on its way, today is the last "cold" morning we see until next winter. Break out the short shirts and shorts and sandals...we are headed for an early spring. And all is right with the racing world! Alan: Your colt Street Life and gelding A Boy Named Em (let's call him "Emily" for short) have a lot of speed to run at tomorrow in the 7th at Aqueduct. They'd better chow down on those oats today. Stretch their legs, and get some good relaxing down time. Tomorrow we rock Dave Liftin, who doesn't have either mentioned in his race analysis for the itm. However we know better, and with Junior Alvarado anb Eddie Castro up respectively will be gunning down the speed late! Keith L.

Street Life looked like his daddy in the AQU stretch last out...but it was only one race. This was the description of his race from gradeoneracing.com: "Looked like he was shot out of a cannon 1.5f out as he went by the entire field in a matter of strides going last to first for the win as much the best!" We'll see if Street Life can repeat that performance tomorrow. He may just be another of these "one horse internet wonders", but I obviously hope otherwise. BTW, gradeoneracing.com continues to be a wonderful source of racing information not easily found elsewhere - it is a great adjunct to Formulator and/or BRIS for my handicapping!

Curtis V Slewster (a.k.a. Curt V), I know you LOVE Slewsters. I know you like EURO horses on GRASS - you have told me many times before. That was not the point I was making, far from it. I was remarking that Willyconker went from 2 yr old dunce on Irish GRASS, to Group 1 winner on Californian GRASS, and speculating why. I suggested, rather clumsily it seems, that this massive improvement may not be down to the merits of Willyconker (or his breeding), but more to the local chemist. While medication is legal in your country, that is fine for US handicappers. I just happen to dislike it, particularly if it distorts by making chumps into champs - no disrespect to Willyconker. Its all a matter of opinion. Best Regards - Bernard Downes

Bernard, New #1 in the world of Golf..Move over Tiger, Rory Mac.. is in the house.. Check out my link I posted on BUTTS: The song is called "Da Butt" or "Doin' the Butt"........Funny song, & it might make you wanna dance.... I am aware of Lasix, & quite frankly mostly all horses that run in the USA are on it.. So, what exactly is your point ? You don't like Lasix or chemicals..Okay..Doesn't it seem the horse needed it ? Quite frankly Bernie, I'm looking to hit long shots. Whether the horse is from Mars makes no differential to me. You stay being a drug free purist & I'll keep on hitting longies. That's my point. The horse is in race shape. Whether he ran a G3 or a G1, what's the difference ? I'm looking to make money. If you don't want to see why I played the horse, throw out the advice. I saw it, & I'm relaying my handicapping process. He was a Euro, who happened to be out of Seattle Slew & in shape & @11-1..$23.20...Thank you very much.........Remember a aways back when you posted some horses & asked me if the Slew was in any ? Well Bernard, There was one............. Go ahead & be my guess & bet the horses over here w/o Lasix..You might as well go to the unemployment window........LoL.......You're still my man Bernard....... Curt V.>Best regards.......

Here's my tribute for trying to locate the 15 additional REPLY comments, after noticing there were only 3 new comments after where I left the blog last.....Of C-horse It never gives me any reference point & I never know how my current comment is going to appear. It leaves my sentences looking all haphazardly..So here it is..>>& it also includes why I use the term BUTTS:...... "Experience Unlimited"{the group} in a Spike Lee movie from 1988, called "School Daze". A you tube video & here's what is unique...Everbody has their clothes ON... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FShE0VifCYs&feature=related Please bring back the days of Copy & Paste...It was so much easier then & one won't have to belabor oneself just trying to read the comments..This is a true nightmare..In theory it's a beautiful thing. Just hit the reply & post it there. BUTTS:in actuality it only works if the blog has like 10 comments. BUTTS: this is formblog w/Dan Illman, not your usual blog. Dan doesn't get 10 comments, he gets 300 comments..Leave the theorists in the IT dept. Leave common sense to the horse playing Formbloggers..Bring back sanity pleaZe.......& where are you Fisherman ? Curt V.>& I expect about 15 errors here......
