Belmont: From spill to thrill for Chavez

What a difference a day makes.

In Wednesday's fifth race, Jorge Chavez was unseated at the quarter pole when his mount, Pea Stone, broke down. After being evaluated at North Shore University Hospital, Chavez was fine and he said he would ride Thursday.

In Thursday's fifth race, Chavez indeed demonstrated he was fine with a persevering ride on Liondrive, trained by Tim Ice, to get a neck victory. Liondrive was dropping from two maiden special weight races in for a $65,000 claiming tag. Chavez must have really liked this one, because he took off his mount in the last, a 20-1 morning-line choice in Man On the Right.

Several riders took off on Thursday including Joe Bravo, Channinng Hill and Mike Luzzi. Rajiv Maragh took off his final two mounts on the card, Ausable Chasm in the eighth (now Leparoux) and Zachary Cherryboy (To be announced) in the ninth.
