Brethren, a 2-year-old half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver, won his debut by one-half length Saturday, running six furlongs in a very quick 1:08.88 aided perhaps by a tailwind in the stretch. Brethren, by Distorted Humor and owned by WinStar Farm and trained y Todd Pletcher, broke on top despite bobbling in his second stride out of the gate. He stalked Backdown, through a quarter of 22.82 seconds and a half-mile in 45.53. After racing alongside Backdown the quarter pole to the eighth pole, Brethren took the lead and held off a wide rally from second-time starter Black N Beauty who got second by one-half length over Fire With Fire.
By comparison, Misile Motor, a 7-year-old gelding, won a $10,000 claimer by running six furlongs in 1:09.85
Brethren won first out. It took Super Saver, a son of Maria's Mon, until his second start to win.
It would mean running back in three weeks, but could easily see Brethren making his second start in the Grade 2, $150,000 Nashua at Aqueduct on Nov. 6. That race is run as a one-turn mile at Aqueduct.
Best Bets
YOU DON'T PASS ran a corker first-time off the bench April 13, when he beat next-out winners Ronaldino and Daniel Be Good while capturing a $16K seller. He bounced 16 days later in a longer event, and could rebound at a square price here while shortening up a furlong and dropping in class. MR. ROD received an 80 Beyer last time, when he trounced $8K opposition going five and a half. His hot trainer has won at just a 9% clip second-time off the claim over the last five years ($0.93 ROI), so he isn't worth backing at a chalky price.
