Belmont Park: Repole gets day off to good start

Email

Owner Mike Repole seeks his first graded stakes victory when he sends out Uncle Mo as a prohibitive favorite in Saturday's Grade 1 Champagne Stakes at Belmont.

Repole got his afternoon off to a winning start when Run to Grand Ave., bar shoe off, circled three wide turning for home then persevered to the wire under David Cohen to win the $12,500 claiming event that served as today's opener. The final time of 1:09.98 is a signal that the track is indeed fast.

Repole, dressed in an all black suit today and hosting about 40 family and friends, has Gerard Loves Beer, the 3-1 morning-line favorite in the fourth today as well. As expected, Repole and trainer Todd Pletcher scratched Stay Thirsty out of the Champagne to train up to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.
