Belmont Park: Nicanor holds on

Nicanor, the 4-year-old younger full brother to the ill-fated 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro, got loose on the lead under Ramon Dominguez and held off a late run from Skipadate to win a third-level allowance race by a neck.

Nicanor won for the fourth time from 11 starts for Roy and Gretchen Jackson's Lael Stable and trainer Michael Matz. He ran 1 1-16 miles in 1:42.70 and returned $15.40. Balette, the 9-5 favorite, finished a non-threatening fourth.

It was the third win on the card for Dominguez.

Nicanor is likely headed back to stakes company and the Grade 3, $100,000 Knickerbocker here going 1 1-8 miles on Oct. 17 could be a possibility.
