Belmont Park: Mott remains perfect this week

Trainer Bill Mott can only hope his good fortune this week carries over to next week when he runs horses in five Grade 1 races at Belmont Park (See Belmont notes later on this website for details).

Mott went 2 for 2 on Friday and is now 4 for 4 at Belmont this week.

The Hall of Fame trainer capped his perfect week when Erma Lee, who lost twice in turf routes at Saratoga, cut back to seven furlongs and unleashed a strong late kick under Julien Leparoux to win a maiden special weight race on the grass. Erma Lee returned $10.60.

That gave Mott bookend wins on the card as he also took the opener with Midnight Mischief ($7.80).

On Thursday, Mott won a second-level turf allowance with Gold d'Oro ($8.60) and on Wednesday he won a third-level dirt allowance with Birdrun ($11.20).

Mott, who now has 5 wins at this meet --- two behind Rudy Rodriguez --- has two horses entered on Saturday's card including the first-time starter Caneros, a son of Distorted Humor, in the fifth, and Devil By Design, a 12-1 morning-line choice in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Stakes for fillies and mares going 6 1-2 furlongs on dirt.
