Belmont Park: Indian Bob fatally injured; Velasquez off for day

Indian Bob, the 6-5 second choice in Wednesday's third, a $10,000 claimer, fell one-quarter mile into the race, and suffered a fatal injury.

His jockey, Cornelio Velasquez, did get up and left the track under his own power, but took off his remaining three mounts on the card.

It appeared as though Indian Bob suffered a cardiopulmonary issue, which led to him falling. He never got up and had to be dragged onto the equine ambulance. Indian Bob, a 4-year-old son of Indian Charlie, sold for $350,000 as a yearling in 2007. He won 2 of 7 starts.

The race was won by Bridge to Nowhere, the even-money favorite, who was guided by Ramon Dominguez to the inside of Retriever, who drifted out several paths in the stretch while failing to hold on after setting the pace.
