Belmont Park: Friday card canceled; track open for simulcasting

Email

Belmont Park canceled live racing Friday for the second consecutive day, as a slow-moving storm didn't fully reach Long Island until just after 6 a.m. Heavy rains and strong gusty winds were scheduled throughout the day.

Thursday's card was canceled for basically the same reasons, but there was only minimal rainfall on Long Island from 11 a.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday. There were strong gusty winds, however, on Thursday.

In a bit of a strange decision, Belmont will be open for simulcasting Friday. The track was not open for simulcasting Thursday.

Belmont should re-open Saturday for live racing. Saturday is the biggest card of the meet with five Grade 1 races, topped by the $750,000 Jockey Club Gold Cup. Remember, first post Saturday is 12;30 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than usual. There will be 11 races.
