Belmont: New Madrid runs 5th

New Madrid (6th), racing first time on turf and first time in blinkers, was head and head for the lead through slow fractions, and faded to finish fifth of seven in a first-level allowance at 1 1/8 miles on the inner course.

Meanwhile, Kindergarden Kid ($16.40), a $500,000 3-year-old colt by Dynaformer from Lael Stable, was a most impressive winner, after sweeping four wide to the lead approaching the stretch and holding off Cherokee Speed and Spanish Art through a last three furlongs in 34.62 seconds over "good" ground. Turf or dirt, that had to be one of the best performances of the season by a 3-year-old not named Eskendereya; Barclay Tagg has a monster.
