Belmont: Jackson Bend next-to-last in return

In a bit of curious strategy, the Robert LaPenta-trained entry of Our Dark Knight and Jackson Bend went head-and-head for the lead in the Star of Cozzene overnight stakes, and dueled each other into submission at even money.

Colizeo ($17.60) was maneuvered to the four-path after breaking from the rail under Ramon Dominguez, challenged in tandem with uncoupled stablemate Brother Bird and drew away through the stretch. Stormy's Majesty overtook Our Dark Knight for second. Jackson Bend, making his first start since finishing fifth of six at odds-on in the Pegasus on June 19, finished next-to-last again in the field of seven 3-year-olds.

Colizeo ran 1 1/16 miles out of the chute in 1:43.05, just slightly faster than he ran the same distance (1:43 and change) in two wins at Churchill around two turns in the spring, so the track is not particularly quick.
