Belmont: Fast (!) & yielding

The main track was bundled up tight through the two-day storm, and was in amazingly good shape through the end of training hours Jockey Club Gold Cup morning. A cloudless sky and northerly breeze are serving as ideal drying agents, and Big Sandy will likely be one of those "wet-fast" strips that yields quick times in typical big-race-day fashion. A reminder that first post today is 12:30 p.m. EDT.

The temporary rails have been taken down on both turf courses, so there is "virgin ground" on the inside. They will be labeled "yielding" for the Flower Bowl (inner) and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic (Widener); races 5 and 11 have been taken off the grass.

To recall, there is a $23,233 pick-6 carryover from Wednesday, which was the last day of racing here. The sequence is races 6-11, beginning with the Vosburgh, a Grade 1 in name only this year, at 3:23 p.m. EDT.

There is a $500,000 guaranteed pick-4 on the Flower Bowl, Beldame, Turf Classic and Gold Cup (races 7-10), beginning with the Flower Bowl at 3:59 p.m. EDT.
