Belmont: Apprentic Oritz taken to hospital with possible head injury

Email

Apprentice rider Irad Ortiz Jr. was taken to North Shore University Hospital with a possible head injury after being thrown from his mount, Freud's Debut in Saturday's ninth race at Belmont. Ortiz's mount appeared to bump with Hurricane Hill in the early stages of the race.

Ortiz, 17, hit the ground hard and needed to be taken off the course on a stretcher by emergency technicians.

Ortiz's spill came the day after Ramon Dominguez was involved in a spill on the turf at Belmont. Dominguez took off his nine mounts Saturday due to stiffness in his neck.
