BCQualify contest has Eastern flavor

The races for Sunday’s contest at BCQualify.com have been announced. Entries cost $190 and up to four seats to the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge at Keeneland will be awarded, depending on event participation.

As with Saturday’s NHCQualify.com event, all races are taking place in the Eastern time zone between Gulfstream, Aqueduct, and Woodbine.  As of now, the weather projects to be okay for each track but of course, winter racing is always unpredictable.  The spacing looks excellent though it’s always still a good idea to have default picks in ahead of time. Note that there are three maiden races in this sequence – that’s unusual but is a feature, not a bug, at least if you’re a player who specializes in races for younger horses.

Here’s a look at the races that will be involved in the contest (all times Eastern)

2:45    Aqueduct 6

The contest kicks off with a six-furlong $30,000 maiden claimer on the dirt. A field of nine will go to post. The favorite projects to be Abigail Adsit’s Boss Daddy, breaking from the rail with good early foot. Most players will get creative and try to beat him.

3:00    Gulfstream 6

The contest moves to the Florida and onto the green next for this $20,000 open claimer going 1 1/16 miles. A full field of 12 is scheduled to go to post. This type of race is the backbone of many winter contests and there should be a few interesting prices for players to choose from.

3:14    Aqueduct 7

Back up north for restricted claimers going 6 furlongs on the inner – how very Aqueduct. These 10 older males are all in for $12,500 and have never won two races in their lifetimes. It’s quite an assortment with runners who are 1 for 38, 1 for 42, 1 for 40, and 1 for 50 signed on.

3:29    Gulfstream 7

This is a nice maiden special weight for two-year-old colts going seven furlongs on the dirt – the kind of race that gets horseplayers excited about playing Gulfstream in the winter. Fourteen have been entered by the highest last Beyer Speed Figure any have earned is just 67 so this might be a good place for an upset.

3:43    Aqueduct 8

Eight horses will contest this 1 1/16-mile optional claimer where Bruce Levine sends out Mike Repole’s Misconnect, who figures to take a lot of money here.

3:58    Gulfstream 8

A full-field of three-and-up allowance horses take center stage in the next event, going 1 1/16 miles on the grass. It’s an open-looking race that has potential to yield a price right before the contest enters its second half.

4:12    Aqueduct 9

More bread-and-butter winter racing from the Big A -- $10,000 claimers going 1 1/16 miles on the inner dirt. Eleven have signed on for this including old warriors like 7-year old Lubango ($402,618 in career earnings), 8-year-old Star of New York ($460,313 career earnings), and now 6-year-old 2011 New York Derby winner Socialsaul ($499,375 career earnings).

4:24    Woodbine 8

Our first race north of the border is a first-level allowance for three-and-up going 7 furlongs on the synthetic. It’s a big full field that looks ripe for a price.

4:27    Gulfstream 9

A stakes race limited to three-year-olds going a mile on the dirt. Nine will lineup highlighted by Atreides, the Gulfstream horse-for-course who returns to the races after flopping in a big way in the Indiana Derby. Players will have to accept a short price or take this one on.

4:57    Gulfstream 10

Our fifth and final race from the House that Frank built, this is a $30,000 maiden claimer going 7 1/2 furlongs on the turf. With many X factors in this full field, maiden and turf players should have ample opportunity to find something interesting to play in this one.

5:24    Woodbine 10

We head back north for the late double. This penultimate leg is also our first and only graded stakes in today’s sequence – the Grade 3 Valedictory, a 1 ¾-mile maratathon on the synthetic. Nine project to go to post led by Graham Motion’s $3.6 million winner Manighar, who has yet to find his form since arriving on our shores from Australia. If anyone can get him straightened out, it’s Motion.

5:54    Woodbine 11

The anchor leg is a six-furlong, $32,000 claimer on synth with twelve horses. It’s very likely that in order to qualify you’ll need to come up with the winner of this fascinating handicapping puzzle.
