When I'll Have Another powered his way into the national spotlight at Churchill Downs May 5, 2012, he also powered his way into my - and countless other - hearts.  The Preakness cemented the deal. Count me among those 'wowed' by the red-coated colt with the bright eyes and forward attitude.  Adding to his story were his ever-amiable trainer and sometimes-cranky superstar stable pony. 

Theatrical, Pulpit, Dynaformer, Madcap Escapade, Chief Bearhart, Lord Avie....  Below, a look back at some of the countless magnificent Thoroughbreds that we lost in 2012.  They will be missed.

Royal Delta.  Ramon Dominguez.  Bill Mott.  Union Rags.  Doug O'Neill.  Rapid Redux. Rosie.  Groupie Doll.  Shack... Cherished memories, from Rachel Alexandra and her foal splashed with the summer solstice sun to Havre de Grace galloping across an emerald field one autumn morning.  A heart-warming afternoon with old friends Danny Perlsweig and Lord Avie.  A Santa Anita morning silhouette.  A Saratoga rainbow at sunset.

They peer back at me from countless photos, every day, from each track I visit. Most I will never know, although many faces are familiar. Some hold reins between their fingers and, others, a leadshank.  They often shift from track to track, as meets end and others open – sometimes with just a day’s notice.  Many live on-track.  Most get up at 4 or 5 a.m., even in bitter cold or rain.  Some have no days off.
