Badger Pluto, 1999-2009

Badger Pluto, a beloved companion, accomplished racer, and poster boy for greyhound adoption, died this morning due to complications stemming from bone cancer. He was 9 years old.

The black son of Minaki Zeke and Iron Episode, and a great-grandson of champions Downing and Rooster Cogburn, was born Oct. 18, 1999, in Cleo Springs, Oklahoma. He raced for two years at Plainfield Greyhound Park in Connecticut and was a frequent winner at the Grade A level. He was retired and relocated to Hempstead, N.Y., in 2002, and later appeared in promotions encouraging the adoption of retired racing greyhounds.

He is survived by three known littermates: Badger Popeye, his constant companion since his own retirement in 2004; Zeke (formerly Badger Blimpy) of Hicksville, N.Y.; and Josie (formerly Badger Olive Oyl) of Atlanta, Ga.

Steve...I am so very sad to hear of your loss.....I have been there, as well and there are not enough words to describe the bond that you have with your dogs. My heart goes out to you and yours...There's a great Plainfield greyhound reunion going on in heaven as we speak and there are plenty of dog smiles because of people like you, Steve....KK

Dear Steve, All of us in the Greyhound world and especially those of us from the Night of Stars send our deepest condolences. I, personally, know the joy you experienced and the grief burdening you now, as I have been there too. Just remember what a greyt friend you were to him.

Damn it. As an admirer of the boys, I send my sympathy. Although we had our chuckle about those 'thick abdomens', you know I am always a fan. Favorite photos? The Halloween door shot with the glowing eyes, and of course, sacked out with the form at Saratoga. Jason

steve we adopted a greyhound (miss molly) just last april 2008. she is six (fawn) and a real part of the family. she won one of 23 races and still loves to fly around our back yard. it's amazing we had to teach her everything (how to go upstairs) and even how to take long walks (three miles every morning) early.they are great dogs and a joy to the be around. she sleeping upside down on her pillow in my office now. keep writing. greg allen springfield, mo
