Arlington: Welcome back, winter

Email

Today is May 15. It is 2:45 p.m. This is Chicago, not the North or South Pole. So explain to me how the temperature right now can be 46 degrees. Chatting with a couple elderly ladies at a garden sale yesterday morning, they said this: "I've felt it cold here this time of year, but not THIS cold." Making matters worse is a north (cross/tail through stretch) wind whipping at about 20 miles per hour. Lots of rain the last 24 hours, so turf racing has been called off.

Maybe the horses in race 1 were too cold to run any faster, but this race, an open $10K maiden-claimer, was historically slow. A one-turn mile in 1:42 and change featuring a final quarter (with a mild tail-wind, no less) in more than 28 seconds. Jumpin Jordyn was the lucky winner, getting Hawthorne leading trainer Joel Berndt his first win of the meet.
