Arlington: Two down on Saturday

On turf for first time this racing week, with course listed as 'yielding' and the inner rail set up in lane 2. Just saw day's first grass race, for $25K 2yo maiden sprinters, and final 5fs time of 1:00.40 for Chuck Simon-trained second-time starter Surfer Rosa suggests that yes, the turf course is yielding.

Mostly sunny and 80 degrees today, with southwest wind (cross/head in stretch) from 10 - 15 mph. Wind pushed splits in race 1, a $10K Poly-sprint starter allowance, to 22.47 and 45.37, and pace-setting longshot What Do You Mean lost on a head bob. Could Poly be carrying speed? Final time of 1:17.09 says main track is only slightly quick despite the fast splits. Winner Carnack's Choice claimed out of last by trainer Roger Brueggemann for owner Scarlet Stables. The Brueggemann-Scarlet claims deserve far more attention than the Brueggemann-Midwest Thoroughbred claims, in my experience. Odds-on Calabrese-owned chalk Cure was in trouble before the quarter pole and checked in last.
