Arlington: Thursday update

Hot. 90 degrees. Wind east (tail-wind stretch) 8-12 mph. Turf rail in lane 1, turf firm.

Five in the books today, and nothing doing for closers on Poly. Speed and pressers in three synthetic races so far, and jocks are riding like being close is a must. Times average to slow so far, but no fast horses, for that matter.

On turf, 9yo mare Party of Eight won her eighth race of the year after entering 2010 with 5 career victories. Took another $5K turf-sprint starter allowance, and though -- as in her last start - a closer was cutting into POE's stretch lead, she basically had the race won at the eighth pole.

Catalano-trained heavy chalk Backstabber was rated farther off the pace than in any of his previous losses and was much the best in race 4, turf-sprint MSW.
