Arlington: Sunday conditions, race 1 in books

Turf "good" with rail in lane 2.

Light rain, 72 degrees, WINDY, with southwest wind (cross/head in stretch) from 28-35 mph.

Team of Heart just captured the opener, a 3 & up, f & m MSW Poly sprint. First-timer trained and owned by Doug Matthews and bred by Louie Roussel had one major gap in works, and another gap without a breeze between July 1 and July 27. But ready to win from post 1 under high ROI jock Florent Geroux, a Matthews mainstay the last couple years. Came off fence for stretch run and wore down Hard to Get Even. Favored Lady Macqueen disputed pace and caved in badly. Winning time of 1:11.16 for three-quarters suggests track is on the quick side. Remember those days back in June where high allowance horses were going six furlongs in 1:12 and change? My guess is that the Poly, totally dug up by AP during the offseason, has steadily settled and compacted through the summer, since we have seen consistently faster times most of July and into August than we did in June.
