Arlington: Miss Doctor Ty a Pick 4 single - NOT

Email

Granted, Miss Doctor Ty was bet way, way, way below fair value in race 6, an $18K turf-route claimer and starting leg of the late Pick 4, but I would make a large bet that she attracted a far lower percentage of the Pick 4 pool. I looked hard at this race, and wound up thinking MDT was, indeed, going to be superior on the day. But that we shall never know because of, ahem, pilot error. MDT was in good striking position turning for home, but there was some traffic, and in behind the two leaders, with another foe to her outside, Miss Doctor Ty was guided INSIDE and down toward the rail approaching the eighth pole, just as the horse covering her flank began fading away. So, while there was nothing but wide open space to pass the top two with a 3-wide move, there went MDT trying to put her nose up into a non-existent spot between the two leaders. A belated swing to the outside came far too late, and front-running Snicklebritches, who set a decent pace from the rail, held off pressing Differentiate, with MTD third. Thus went the Pick 4 play up in flames.

Tracking back, Mawaaqef regressed as the favorite in race 5, a turf-sprint MSW, and wound up fourth. Up front, Jim DiVito-trained firster Quality Diplomat made a clear early lead, and held fairly comfortable under Julio Felix, DiVito's second straight win on the day. Told you he was hot.

So, that's three front-end turf winners in four grass races today; perhaps my guess after race 1 that the grass was carrying speed was not so far off after all.
