Arlington: Mavericking, Animal Kingdom foe, wins on Wednesday


Its fair to say that race 9 last Sept. 10 at Arlington was a productive maiden heat. The winner, Willcox Inn, went on to finish third in the BC Juvenile Turf and should be a player in Arlington's series of 3-year-old turf races this summer. The place horse, Animal Kingdom, just won the Kentucky Derby. The fourth horse, Suntracer, won a 3-year-old turf allowance at the Keeneland spring meet and also should be a turf-stakes player here this summer. And show horse Mavericking, bouncing back from a flop in the Louisiana Derby, looked pretty good winning an Illinois-bred N1X allowance, race 4 on this card. Mavericking is owned by Team Block, the family of trainer Chris Block, but still is being trained by Neil Pessin, who had the horse over the winter in New Orleans. Dropping way, way down in class, he paid just $2.60 capturing in a one-turn Polytrack mile by two lengths,
