Arlington: Dawnie Macho sets 4.5-furlong track record

I told y'all the track might be quick. I know, 6fs in 1:12.64 to start the day, but those are slow horses. Dawnie Macho, the latest Wayne Catalano-trained 2yo filly, is not a slow horse. She just won race 2, her career debut, by many lengths, and set a track record for four and one-half furlongs, 51.16 seconds. Broke on top from wide draw, had an outside challenge early, but then quickly burst clear when asked for some run into the stretch by jockey Mike Baze.

"The kid said when he clucked to her, she went like a jet engine," Catalano just told me.

Dawnie Macho bred for speed, by Macho Uno and out of a Montbrook mare. She cost just $5K as yearling, and RNA'd for $49,000 at the OBS Spring 2yo sale in Florida. She's owned by Wayne Granger, a new Catalano client. Filly showed one drill for debut, a half from the gate in 48 seconds on June 5, but Catalano said she'd broken from the gate and worked about a quarter-mile a couple other times.

The guy already has trained two 2yo filly champs. This one might not run on very far, but clearly is a fast, fast horse.
