Arlington: Catalano breaks own Arlington wins record on closing day
By Marcus Hersh
Email
Win number 75 of Arlington 2010 came in race 4 for trainer Wayne Catalano, when Summer Upcountry won one of the turf sprints that have become such a key cog in the Arlington racing program the last month or so. The win total broke by one the meet record Catalano set in 2007.
Catalano has more horses than any other trainer at Arlington, he has owners that allow him to spot stock aggressively, and he clearly is an accomplished horseman, so setting a new record for training wins during a season here comes as no surprise. Even still, Catalano landed more squarely on his feet than many might have expected after he and owner Frank Calabrese split two winters ago at Gulfstream Park. Catalano has a deep client base, traffics in both higher- and lower-end stock, and has a tremendous number of 2-year-olds. From the look of things right now, he's well positioned to continue winning at a strong clip wherever his stable winds up in the next couple years.
Best Bets
YOU DON'T PASS ran a corker first-time off the bench April 13, when he beat next-out winners Ronaldino and Daniel Be Good while capturing a $16K seller. He bounced 16 days later in a longer event, and could rebound at a square price here while shortening up a furlong and dropping in class. MR. ROD received an 80 Beyer last time, when he trounced $8K opposition going five and a half. His hot trainer has won at just a 9% clip second-time off the claim over the last five years ($0.93 ROI), so he isn't worth backing at a chalky price.
