Aqueduct: Six go in Wood; filly denied entry

After initially defending their choice to allow entry to the 3-year-old filly Nicky Boy in Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Wood Memorial, New York Racing Association officials came to their senses and denied her entry into the Wood.

A field of six was entered for the race: From the rail out: Most Happy Fella (Anna Napravnik), Awesome Act (Julien Leparoux), Eskendereya (John Velazquez), Schoolyard Dreams (Ramon Dominguez), Jackson Bend (Calvin Borel) Carnivore (Justin Shepherd).

The connections of of Nicky Boy entered the maiden filly in the race despite her having been beaten 120 3-4 lengths in her first two starts. In the morning, Nicky Boy's entry made for six horses, which would allow trifecta wagering to be offered. But when Most Happy Fella entered the race, there was no need for Nicky Boy.

Of course, NYRA officials would never admit that the only reason to allow her into the field was to have another warm body, but you have believe that was the primary reason for even considering it.

``It's our right to not accept the entry,'' said P.J. Campo, NYRA's director of racing.

All four stakes on Saturday's card drew six horses. The Carter has only five betting interests. The four stakes comprise a pick-four with a guaranteed pool of $500,000.
