Aqueduct: More problems

Email

Shorlty after Coal Baron was vanned off with an apparent shoulder injury, there was an incident in the starting gate for the ninth race that forced two late scratches including that of favorite Greece. Secret Bigs somehow got stuck under the starting gate and had to be scratched. Greece in the stall next to him acted up and dinged himself in the gate and was also scratched. Thus, the 10-horse field scratched down to 8.

When the race went off Its the Big Cat and Big Gavel got into a protracted speed duel with Big Gavel pulling away turning for home and holding on over the late running Ponte Vecchio in a staggerfest to the wire. That's Big Gavel's first win in his 13th career start.

Hard to believe this is possible, but the turf racing here is worse than the dirt racing.

Coa, who had been unseated when Coal Baron went down, was aboard the winner.
