Aqueduct: Flashpoint makes sharp debut

Email

Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. obviously did not take all of his good 3-year-olds to south Florida for the winter.

Flashpoint, a son of Pomeroy, made a good-looking debut Saturday, breaking sharply from the rail under Cornelio Velasquez and cruised to a 6 1-4-length victory over 1-4 favorite Simba's Story, who had finished third to another Dutrow runner, Rift earlier in the meet.

Flashpoint, owned by Peachtree Stable, ran six furlongs in 1:09.68, the third fastest time at the distance over the inner track this meet. Only Calibrachoa (1:08.85 in the Gravesend) and Black Pen (1:09.67) have run faster. Coincidentally, those times were posted in back-to-back races on the Dec. 18 card.

If Dutrow keeps Flashpoint in New York, he could be a candidate for the Fred ``Cappy'' Capossela Stakes here on March 5.

Rift, who by the way ran six furlongs in 1:09.77, runs in Monday's Jimmy Winkfield.
