10/22: Breeders' Cup Mile report
ARCADIA, Calif.-Refuse to Bend and Special Ring fared well in the post position draw for Saturday's $1.5 million Breeders' Cup Mile, while Oasis Dream, Perfect Soul and Six Perfections were not as fortunate.

Refuse to Bend and Special Ring will start from post 5 and 6 in the 14-horse field, positions that will give their respective jockeys a chance to save ground going into the first turn.

Drawn to the outside were Oasis Dream in 10, Six Perfections in 13 and Perfect Soul in 14. All three are expected to be leading contenders, but will need lucky trips to save ground on the tight turf course.

The 14 horses selected by the committee to start were the 14 entered. There was no place in the race for Statue of Liberty, Taste of Paradise and Pie n Burger.

10/22: Breeders' Cup Sprint report

ARCADIA, Calif. - Shake You Downs's chance to win the Breeders' Cup Sprint diminished at the draw Wednesday, when the fastest six-furlong horse in the race drew the second-worst post - number 2 in a 13-horse field.

Thirteen entered the race, in which multiple Grade 1 winner Aldebaran (post 6) was installed as the 3-1 morning line favorite by Santa Anita linemaker Jeff Tufts.

Shake You Down is the second choice at odds of 4-1, despite a post that did not please trainer Scott Lake. "He's going to have to go the first couple jumps," Lake said, "and then see what everybody else is doing."

Zavata is stuck in post 1, and will gun toward the lead, along with Shake You Down and Midas Eyes.

The field, with jockeys and odds:

Post 1: Zavata, Gary Stevens, 15-1
Post 2: Shake You Down, Mike Luzzi, 4-1
Post 3: Posse, Pat Day, 15-1
Post 4: Valid Video, Edgar Prado, 8-1
Post 5: Midas Eyes, John Velazquez, 10-1
Post 6: Aldebaran, Jerry Bailey, 3-1
Post 7: Ethan Man, Rene Douglas, 20-1
Post 8: Bluesthestandard, Mike Smith, 12-1
Post 9: Private Horde, Jason Lumpkins, 20-1
Post 10: Great Notion, Tyler Baze, 20-1
Post 11: Cajun Beat, Cornelio Velasquez, 20-1
Post 12: Yankee Gentleman, Pat Valenzuela, 6-1
Post 13: Captain Squire, Alex Solis, 10-1

10/22: Breeders' Cup Turf report
Bright Sky will be the only female in Saturday's $2 million Turf after the Wildenstein Stable and trainer Elie Lellouche opted to start against males and bypass the $1 million Filly and Mare Turf.

She brings the number of entrants to nine for the richest turf race in the nation. The field is led by Falbrav, High Chaparral, Storming Home, and Sulamani, all major stakes winner in the United States and Europe this year.

There is no standout in the race. Storming Home is the 5-2 favorite on the morning-line.

Refuse to Bend, one of the top milers in Europe this year, jogged a mile on dirt at Santa Anita on Tuesday.

Trained by Dermot Weld, Refuse to Bend has shown erratic form since winning the English 2000 Guineas on May 3. He finished 13th of 20 in the Epsom Derby over 1 1-2 miles on June 7, a distance that Weld felt was beyond his best.

He won the Group 3 Desmond Stakes by three lengths at Leopardstown, Ireland, on Aug. 17, but was only 11th in the Group 1 Prix du Moulin on Sept. 7. Weld said the loss could be attributed to a slow early pace that worked against Refuse to Bend.

At Hollywood Park, Irish Warrior breezed a half-mile in 52 seconds. The winner of the Del Mar Handicap on Aug. 30, Irish Warrior will be a longshot in the Mile and will be ridden by Alex Solis.

The $2 million Breeders' Cup Turf on Tuesday lost one starter in Deeliteful Irving, gained one in top European Falbrav and may gain another if Bright Sky is entered on Wednesday.

Falbrav has won four Group 1 races in England and France this year, ranging in distances from a mile to 1 5-16ths. Falbrav galloped a mile on the main track at Santa Anita on Tuesday.

Deeliteful Irving, second to Turf hopeful Sulamani in the Turf Classic at Belmont Park on Sept. 27, will not run after trainer Michael Dickinson said he was not happy with the 5-year-old emerged from a workout last week.

Bright Sky has been pre-entered for the Filly and Mare Turf and Turf and a decision on her race will be made on Wednesday when entries are taken, international racing officials said. Earlier this year Bright Sky was second to Falbrav in the Prix d'Ispahan over about 1 1-8 miles at Longchamp in Paris.
